Kristen Helms, LCSW-S

I am a born and bred New Yorker. I moved to Texas in 2005 and have called Houston home ever since. Open windows, delicious things and spending time with the people that I love brings me joy. I love to listen and be in the company of others. Helping is my passion!

I have a Master’s Degree in Social Work from New York University (NYU – 2005). I have trained with many great clinicians with a focus on those who may feel resistant to therapy. My clinical work experience and interests include substance use / misuse, anger, adjustment issues, crisis, grief and parenting.

My career in social work has allowed me the opportunity to work with a lot of different people and in various settings. I have vast experience working with parents and supporting them in times of crisis and grief through my professional roles as a school counselor and children’s hospital social worker. My private practice work has focused on substance use/misuse, anger and adjustment issues. I have many years of experience working with individuals with some who have had involvement in the criminal justice system.

I believe strongly in evidence-based treatments that help people to live better lives. My goal is always to work in a way that feels best for each person. My approach to change includes the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing and Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). My work with couples is based on the Gottman Method and Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT). I believe strongly in the importance of a strong therapeutic relationship and utilize person-centered therapy to build rapport, positive regard and trust.

As a therapist my focus is on helping people to make changes in areas of their life that can bring them more happiness. I believe that one of the most important aspects of change is honesty. My commitment to you is to be an honest and direct practitioner. My experience has given me the opportunity to have heard many different stories and sorrows, so rest assured that I can provide you the space and empathy to listen to your hardest challenges. I will encourage you to honestly reflect on areas of your life where change can be most impactful and help to guide you through how to make that change.

I look forward to working with you!
