Kristen Helms, LCSW-S

I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Supervisor in Texas - originally trained at New York University, where I earned my Master's Degree in Social Work.

With nearly two decades of experience, I specialize in men's mental health, anger issues, and substance misuse. I also focus on helping women manage the delicate balance between mental health, career, and family. My clinical expertise really shines when working with newcomers to therapy — particularly those who might be skeptical or uncertain about how therapy can benefit them.

I believe that building a strong, trusting relationship is key. In my practice, I ensure a safe and confidential environment where you can speak freely, fostering trust in the process — allowing you to fully engage and benefit from evidence-based techniques like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). My person-centered approach is also personalized to your specific needs and goals.

I know it can be tough to start — many worry about being judged. But here, you can expect a real partnership and open, honest communication. Together, we'll tackle challenges and explore all aspects of your life. It's hard work, but the rewards are worth it!

FREQUENTLY ASKED

  • I believe that every person deserves access to good therapy. I am open to clients of all gender identities, sexualities, ethnicities, races, religions and abilities.

  • Therapy is for you – we can discuss any and all topics.

Common themes often include relationship struggles—including exploring alternative relationship styles, finances, understanding and regulating emotions, alcohol and substance use, careers, parenthood, issues with self-confidence, and finding a balance in life.

  • Most clients are seen weekly or bi-weekly, depending on their needs and goals. These sessions are often scheduled at the same time and day each week.

Sessions are 55 minutes in length, and if you feel like you could benefit from longer sessions, this is something that can be discussed in person.

Additional half-hour increments are an additional $75, and this addition to therapy is often not covered by insurance.

  • This depends on a person’s needs and goals.

For some clients, once they have met their goals, they feel ready to transition out of regular therapy, knowing they can come back when needed. Others might find that ongoing support from a therapist is an integral part of their self-care routine.

  • The therapeutic relationship is often the greatest predictor of success in therapy. Finding the right therapist, however, can take some time. Whether you receive a recommendation from someone you trust or choose a therapist through an online database, it's important to select someone you feel comfortable speaking with—someone who listens and understands you without judgment.

Your therapist should also support your goals and challenge the patterns that interfere with your success. I believe it's crucial that my clients feel at ease with me and my approach. If I feel we're not a good match, or if the therapy isn't benefiting you anymore, I will guide you on what to look for in your next therapist.

  • Yes! Therapy is hard work, and opening up to someone new can be challenging. It's normal to feel uncomfortable discussing personal issues.

My job is to create a safe and comfortable space for you. In the beginning, I'll help guide our conversations and identify topics you might want to explore. You lead your sessions, though, and you decide what we talk about.

You're not doing this alone, and many find it relieving to talk to someone solely focused on helping them achieve their goals.

  • Active participation.

Your therapist is there to guide and challenge you, but the change must come from you. You need to be willing to explore your patterns and remain open-minded to the techniques used in therapy.

Patience is also important—it often takes years to establish negative patterns, and similarly, it can take time to change the thinking and behaviors that contribute to your feelings.

Remember, change is not only possible but achievable with your commitment.

  • I am an in-network provider on several insurance panels and currently accept new clients with Aetna and United Healthcare.

If you would like to use your insurance benefits, please reach out for benefits verification. I can also provide a superbill for insurance panels I am not in network with.

All clients utilizing insurance are responsible for all fees not covered by their insurance, and a credit card is maintained in the client portal for these fees.

  • For some people the greatest benefit is privacy. Using insurance requires me to provide a diagnosis code, and your insurance may access your therapy records at any time.

Plus, finding the right fit is important—whether you’ve been referred by someone you trust or have established a strong therapeutic relationship with a therapist who doesn’t accept your insurance, the potential progress with this therapist can make the investment worth it.

  • If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please give me 24 hours’ notice. A full session fee will be collected for any missed appointments or late cancellations. Missed or late cancellation fees are not covered by insurance.
